What foods can help to improve immunity?
Citrus Fruits
Citrus fruits contain Vitamin C, an important nutrient that empowers the immune system to fight against infections. Introducing grapefruits, oranges, clementines, tangerines, lemons, and limes into your diet can help to improve immunity.
Fibre
A high fibre diet can support increased diversity in the gut microbiome, reducing the risk of serious disease. So, aim to eat 30 grams of fibre per day to support your Gut Health and immunity, with the NHS recommending:
- High-fibre breakfast cereals, such as whole wheat biscuits, plain wholegrains or oats
- Wholemeal or granary breads, along with brown rice and wholewheat pasta
- Potatoes with skins on, such as baked potatoes or boiled potatoes
- More pulses like beans, lentils or chickpeas. Throw into your curries, salads and stews to easily incorporate.
- Fresh and dried fruits, as part of meals or snacks throughout the day
- Vegetables like carrots, green beans or raw vegetable sticks
- Unsalted nuts and seeds
Onion, Garlic & Ginger
- Onions - Onions are renowned for their antibacterial, anti‐inflammatory, and other medicinal properties, dating back to Ancient Egypt and being one of the most widely consumed foods in the world.
- Garlic - The compounds in garlic also stimulate the immune system, potentially reducing the risk of certain diseases.
- Ginger - Research suggests that ginger has remarkable pharmacological and physiological effects on health.
Starting off your pasta dishes, curries and soups with onions, garlic and ginger is an easy way to eat more of these immunity-boosting foods.
Kefir
Another food you can introduce to your diet to support Gut Health and immunity is Kefir, which contains a diverse range of beneficial bacteria which can help maintain and support a balanced gut microbiome. Research suggests that adding Kefir into your diet, in turn, can support immune health by modulating immune cell activity and reducing unwanted inflammation.
Kefir is also a source of vitamin B12, which plays a role in supporting the normal function of the immune system, to better fight viral infections.
Can Kefir support the immune system?
As we’ve learnt above, strengthening the gut microbiome helps to support stronger immunity, and research shows that one way you can increase the diversity of your gut microbiome is by consuming Kefir.
Kefir may help to suppress viral activity by regulating responses in the immune system, with its potential to be antiviral, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory. The unique combination of bacteria and yeasts can enhance gut diversity, which then potentially reduces risk factors associated with a number of metabolic and immune disorders.
At Biotiful, we’ve made it easier than ever to support your Gut Health with our range of Kefir yogurts and drinks. Biotiful Kefir is stocked in major supermarkets across the UK, so it couldn’t be easier to incorporate it into your routine with just one 250g or 250ml portion each day.

Frequently asked questions about Gut Health, Kefir and immunity
Get the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about immunity, Kefir and gut health!
Why is Gut Health important for immunity?
A healthy gut and a healthy immune system go hand in hand. The gut is home to a complex community of microorganisms, known as the gut microbiome, which includes beneficial bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microbes.
The gut microbiome profoundly influences the immune system, supporting the body’s ability to respond effectively to infection and inflammation. A good way to support Gut Health and immunity simultaneously is by focusing on what you eat.
One food particularly which research shows plays a crucial regulatory role in immune response is Kefir, as a natural source of B12 which supports immunity. At Biotiful, our Kefir products contain billions of live cultures and calcium to help support Gut Health and help increase the diversity of the gut microbiome.
Is Kefir good to consume when you’re ill?
The gut microbiome can respond quickly to changes in diet, however, Kefir should be introduced as part of a longer-term balanced diet to support a regulated gut microbiome and support immunity.
Many studies that show Kefir can play a role in the prevention and treatment of diseases take place over periods of 30 days through to 12 weeks. So, rather than consuming it as a short term solution when you’re ill, you should incorporate Kefir into a balanced diet over a longer period to support your Gut Health.
How can I introduce Biotiful Kefir to boost immunity?
If you don’t currently consume Biotiful Kefir, it’s such a simple thing to introduce into your diet to support your gut microbiome, which in turn can help support your immunity. Our Biotiful products contain vitamin B12, which is a key vitamin that plays a role in supporting the normal function of the immune system. With so many versatile options available, it couldn’t be easier to get your daily dose of Kefir.
If you’re looking to add Kefir to your breakfast, our Kefir yogurts can be consumed on their own or combined with other ingredients such as fruit, honey, oats, granola and chia seeds to form a delicious yogurt bowl.
